The Arrival of an AIOS
For years, Xiaomi phones were known for speed—quick iterations, aggressive pricing—but they lagged in AI. That changed with HyperOS 4, the company's first self-styled AI operating system. After using it on a Xiaomi 17 Ultra, I can say it's a solid first attempt, though it leaves you wanting more, especially in health-related applications.
A Subtle UI, a Bold AI Core
Visually, HyperOS 4 is restrained. There's a new glassy design: lock screen, control center, and folders become translucent, with soft light effects when you drag icons or toggle switches. It looks clean and modern, without overdoing the blur. Performance is snappier too, with less stutter and better battery life.
But underneath, AI is everywhere. The system's AI, called Super XiaoAi, isn't just a chatbot anymore. It's a system-wide controller handling memory, input, and cross-app tasks. Xiaomi split XiaoAi into three parts earlier this year: model foundation, cloud engineering, and on-device products. This shows AI is becoming infrastructure, not just a feature.
Memory: The Foundation for Personal Health Data
The most promising feature for health informatics is XiaoAi Memory. You can swipe up with three fingers on any screen, and the system saves what you see. Later, you can ask XiaoAi to retrieve it. I tested this with a nutrition label and a gym schedule—recognition was accurate, and retrieval was smooth.
However, memory is currently just storage. When I captured a food receipt, I wished it would extract calories or log the expense automatically. Xiaomi says features like extracting pickup codes and queue numbers are coming via OTA, so there's hope for more proactive health data capture.
Cross-Device Health Data Flow
XiaoAi Memory syncs across Xiaomi devices. Your phone's memories, notes, and photos can be accessed on a PC via the Xiaomi Interconnect app, and vice versa. This means health data—like step counts, sleep logs, or medication reminders—could seamlessly travel from your phone to your laptop. Even Windows and Mac computers now support Super XiaoAi, broadening its reach.
You can also set up timed tasks to automate repetitive actions, like checking health apps daily. I set one to pull up my fitness tracker summary every morning—it worked flawlessly.
AI at the Heart of Home Health
Super XiaoAi can control your smart home. Say, "I'll be home in an hour and want to watch a movie," and it will adjust the AC, close curtains, set mood lighting, and prepare your TV. For health, imagine instructing it to "prepare a relaxing evening"—it could dim lights, play calming music, and adjust room temperature, all based on your preferences.
This integration of health-related routines is where AIOS could shine, but it's early days.
AI Subscriptions: A New Model for Health Services?
Xiaomi is testing a subscription for advanced AI features. Users get 1,000 free credits monthly, with each task costing roughly 12–20 credits. That's about 50–80 free uses a month. Paid plans start at ¥29/month (¥19 if subscribed continuously) for 4,000 credits, up to ¥149/month for 34,000 credits.
This could fund personalized health insights, but it also raises questions about data privacy and cost for users who rely on AI for health management.
AI-Powered Apps: Notes and Voice Input
Among native apps, Notes received the biggest AI upgrade. It now supports real-time recording that identifies speakers and automatically generates meeting notes. This is a boon for doctor's appointments or recording health symptoms. The Recorder app also offers live captions and AI summaries.
Both use Xiaomi's MiMo-V2.5 model, but their data isn't integrated yet. That's a key gap: AI is everywhere, but memory isn't fully unified.
The AI keyboard is another highlight. It offers AI voice input that transcribes speech in real time and polishes it into clear text. This could be handy for quickly logging meals or symptoms without typing.
Interaction: Super Island and the Promise of Inspiration Ball
For long AI tasks, progress appears on the Super Island (like a dynamic island). There's also a global AI writing assistant and memory features. However, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra lacks a dedicated AI button, making some functions less intuitive. I hope future models add one.
An upcoming feature called "Inspiration Ball" is a global magnifier. You place it anywhere on screen, call up XiaoAi, and it searches or answers based on that focused content. This could be revolutionary for health—point at a symptom description and get relevant info.
The Big Picture: AI as the Backbone
Xiaomi is one of the few companies with its own foundation models, OS, and a vast device ecosystem. This integration lets AI access system-level data, enabling deeper personalization. For health informatics, that means potential for continuous, context-aware health monitoring.
But tight coupling also means mistakes are amplified. If the model misinterprets health data, the consequences could be serious. Xiaomi has pledged ¥60 billion over three years for AI—a significant sum, but not unlimited.
Looking Ahead
HyperOS 4 is a promising start. It's practical, not gimmicky. The real test will be how smart the underlying model becomes. As AI phones enter their true era, Xiaomi has laid a solid foundation. The next step is execution—and time will tell if it can deliver on the promise of an AIOS that genuinely improves health informatics.
